The New Pure FM Committee for 2013/14 Posted on April 26, 2013 by Oliver Ing Thursday 25 April saw the election of the committee who will take over the reins of the station for 2013/14. A new position was created this year, Head of Socials, to encourage members to actively stay in contact and bond together in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic socials. The idea of the new position is to take the stress off the shoulders our the Head of Events who this year expressed that the combination was tough. We’ve also renamed and changed some aspects of the role for Secretary which now is called Deputy Station Manager. This role now takes on more duties than previously to ensure the smooth running of the station and to assist the Station Manager where possible. Elected into the new roles are: Station Manager | Orion Brooks Deputy Station Manager | Marnie Creamer Head of Sales & Finance | Wayne Pentony Head of Programming | Ed Roberts Head of Production | Oliver Ing Head of Marketing & Publicity | Sophie Broom Head of Music | Adam Jeffries Head of Technology | Kieran Milton Head of Online | Joel Clayton Head of News | Charlie Price Head of Training | Hugh Varley Head of Socials | Becky McNamara Head of Events | Helen Brennan Pure FM also announced the Pure FM Awards at the AGM and the winners are as follows: Best Show Name: Get Your Hits Out Best Entertainment: Lunch With Tom Cross Best Specialist Show: Luke Myers’ Dance Digest Best Branded Show: Wake Up With Richard & Curtis Best Feature: Pop Song Deconstruction (The Ragamuffin Show) Best Production: Wake Up With Orion Brooks Best New Journalist: Charlie Price Best Piece of Marketing Material: Ed Roberts Best Co-Host: Francesca Ashcroft Best Online Review: Richard Jude (Micheal McIntyre Review) Best Team Member: Becky McNamara Best Newcomer: Adam Jeffries Best Female: Marnie Creamer Best Male: Luke Myers Members Choice Choice Award: Mike Heaps Pure FM Lifetime Honorary Award: Ben Foden
Pure FM Elections 2013 – Manifestos Posted on April 23, 2013 by Oliver Ing We are proud to announce that every position for the 2013/14 Committee has been applied for. Below are each member’s manifestos for the roles they wish to apply for and on Thursday 25 April, each member will stand to do a two minute speech in front of the members to earn their votes. All positions are however, subject to the ratification of the Pure FM Constitution which will be voted at the very start of the AGM. Join us at the AGM HERE 5.1 Station Manager (1) Orion Brooks Vote for me for Station Manager!I am a dedicated individual who is passionate about the direction Pure FM has taken over the past year and would like to continue the good work and improve upon it.I have skills in people management through the management courses I have taken at my job. I am dedicated to the station and how it can be shaped, as I myself do not have aspirations to enter the radio business. I have a well-rounded set of skills, having presented and co-hosted shows this year, worked on a branded show, been on express FM (just the once though) and I have done some of my own production work for my shows. I have also been a member of the Pure Marketing Squad and on one occasion assisted the Tech Team. (We put away cables for like 2 hours) Anyway, My Plan consists of three E’s: 1) Enhance the Branded Show experience by getting it closer to industry style (i.e Advertising) 2) Ensure Pure FM is known around campus as a brand. (I.e T-shirts and Hoodies earlier in year, people are good advertising space.) 3) Express FM, making sure people know about this experience and utilise it to its full potential. Thank you. 5.2 Deputy Station Manager (1) Marnie Creamer I would like to be considered for the position of deputy station manager, as I believe I have the enthusiasm, determination and professional attitude to help manage, uphold and influence the future of PureFm. I have been a member of the PureFm team now for nearly a year and throughout my time as a presenter I have participated and volunteered my services in big events such as Varsity, SRA nomination night and conference, as well as national women’s month. I wish to offer my services further as deputy manager of PureFm, in order to maintain the excellent standards as a university radio station, uphold the regulations and fundamental rules to keep our student community and radio station at it upmost best; as well as enthusing better quality shows, events and university radio standards. I hope to be a valuable member of the team at PureFm, devoting my time and efforts into making the next year at Portsmouth Uni and Pure FM the best yet. Thank you. 5.3 Head of Sales and Finance (1) Wayne Pentony (Timmy Harlequin) As the current Head of Sales and Finance I am confident that I have what it takes to perform this role to its full potential and to the best of my ability, whichever one of those is better. This is my second year with Pure FM and also my first completed year being in the committee for two other societies as well so this sort of role is not new to me. Well, I only got it in January, but let’s skim over that.I do have a calculator and I got 78% in Maths for my Leaving Certificate so, there’s that. I’ve worked very closely with the current Station Manager and Head of Marketing & Publicity with much success and any time that there was an issue with any sort of payments I would kick the Union up it’s arse. Figuratively, I do not condone arse kicking except in extenuating circumstances. So, yes. You should vote for me as I’ve been your Head of Sales and Finance for the past while and it’s gonna pretty damn smoothly so far. Stay in school, say no to most drugs. 5.4 Head of Programming (1) Ed Roberts Hi I am Ed and I would like to be the Head of Programming at Pure FM for the coming academic year. I am currently the Equipment Manager at the station and have also hosted my fair share of shows dating back to the second semester of my first year. As Head of Programming I would like to work on making our current branded shows; Wake Up With, Lunch With and Home Time With, more defined, give them an identity that the students at the University are able to immediately know is theirs. I want to keep the fun attitude that we have towards radio but at the same time create a schedule that presents the Hosts of shows in the best possible way, there is no point having a rock show at four in the afternoon.I will create a small team, something that has not been done in this role in recent years, if not ever. This team would work with hosts from areas of the schedule, be it weekends, mornings, afternoons or evenings, and the goal would be to provide regular feedback to the shows plus someone they know will be able to deal with their specific query.I have seen in the past that when presenters are not trained adequately they make mistakes, I want to continue the scheme of ensuring every presenter has been fully trained before they may do a show. I will work with the Head of Training to ensure that every presenter knows what to do before entering the studio alone for the first time. I will introduce a series of on-going sessions for presenters to attend focusing on certain areas of radio. The aim of these session would be to give presenters information and training on how to improve their show, they could range from using social media in the radio environment to how to come up with a good feature. Feedback is not only important in the development of shows but also the development of the station and works both ways. I will intro a quick feedback form that presenters can fill in that will make them think about the show went and if, for example, there was any music that wasn’t on the system that they wanted or any item in the studio wasn’t working properly. I would then ensure that this information was passed on the right person and that it was acted on. I think that it is important that our members get to experience what it is like to broadcast on a commercial station and I aim keep our strong link with ExpressFM as it provides members an opportunity that very few other stations in the country can provide. 5.5 Head of Production (1) Oliver Ing Hi I’m Oli and I want to be the new production manager for Pure FM. I’m the current Station Manager, soon to be the South East Regional Officer of the SRA and so I’m stepping down from Station Manager to take on production, a great passion of mine!I love making production and want to introduce different sounds tailored to shows and the overnight playlist. This year my aims are: - I want to introduce more power intros, TOH produced music, sweepers, shotguns, rifles, more beds and indents. - Create production that is aimed to develop the members when presenting. - Ensure that the over night playlist is properly catered for in terms of production. - Create better news production. - Ensure the right production is created for our events. - Scrap the million paged CartWall that keeps crashing and add just three or four pages to incorporate the sounds of 2013/14 There’s a lot more I want to do but these are just a few of the things I wish to introduce this year. 5.6 Head of Marketing & Publicity (4) Ashley Armstrong I’m Ashley, 1st Year Student transferring to Television and Broadcasting for September. Marketing and Publicity is one of the key parts of getting people involved and tuning into Pure FM and knowing what we are about. I have taught myself a various number of software packages to produce materials that have enabled me to become confident enough to apply for this position. My main points: - Work with local businesses to run monthly competitions that will get people tuned in more and want to actively engage in shows. I believe working with local communities to show what we do and what we achieve as a station.- I would like to actively publicise events on the monitor in studio one for shows to promote within the union so students can get involved. This would be updated regularly. - When we as a station do our special broadcasts I would like to use different mediums, (yes I know it’s a radio station) to reach out to people who wouldn’t normally tune into Pure FM and get people pushing that ‘Listen Now’ button. - I want to work closely with the production manager and head of programming to ensure that each show has an opportunity for marketing materials and help with their show. I would like to make sure at the beginning of each term that there is a photo shoot for the shows. - Newsletters, I think that we should start a newsletter that will have a show of the week, which is selected by the committee, this will feature in the newsletter with what day and time they are on so listeners can tune in. - Working with the online manager, station manager and head of technology, to see what we can do as to putting Pure FM broadcasts out around the union and university. - I would utilise my knowledge of graphic packages to create publicity for Pure FM, also I would create a flyer at the beginning of the year (fresher’s fayre) for Pure FM with the committee on there so people know who we are and what we are here for. - Work with head of events and head of socials to ensure that each event is marketed to the maximum potential. - If Pure FM needed to make a presentation I would make sure materials are ready for this so that Pure FM has that professional trend throughout. I want more people involved in Pure FM and see more 1st years like myself getting involved and staying active. Any questions then please ask me. Thank-you for reading. Alex Burgham I feel that i would be a suitable candidate for the role of Marketing and Publicity for several reasons. Firstly, i would like to take a much more active role within Pure FM as radio is something im very keen to remain involved in once i graduate from Portsmouth in 2014. Secondly, I will be applying for work experience this summer at stations such as ‘Kiss FM’, ‘Capital FM’ & ‘Absolute Radio’, so i feel that i will be well equipped with experience & knowledge within the marketing area and have a greater understanding of how the top radio stations are managed.I study Drama at the University meaning i have an out going personality and the confidence to promote material. My show ‘Trends & Tunes’ that’s on Thursday nights at 8, already has a large following from my own form of promotion, thus, showing the capabilities i have to be able to promote & advertise successfully. I feel that i have the right capabilities to benefit the promotion of Pure FM, i have a real passion & determination to get involved with radio after University and i feel that this would be a truly excellent opportunity to help me succeed in that area of work. I just need to be given the chance to prove myself. Sophie Broom Hey! I’m Sophie and i’m putting my name forward to be the next Marketing and Publicity manager for PureFM. I’ve been with PureFM since last October and i’m thoroughly enjoying my time and feel that I want to get more involved. What better way then applying for a committee position. I’m currently in my first year doing a Media Studies and Entertainment Technology degree. I also host my own show at PureFM which shows you I am reliable. I’m also a great team player and have good communication skills, which I think are vital in this position. As a candidate for the Marketing & Publicity position I would hope to maintain Tom’s workings from the past year while also adding my own ideas. One being more actively involved in the social media side. I feel that this has slightly lacked and would love to improve it. As someone who is always on social networking sites I believe I can utilise this fast paced environment efficiently. While still promoting our branded shows, I also want to focus on the non-branded shows to help get them as much listenership as well. By promoting these shows on our social network sites I believe we can help increase our listenership.Along with that I want to try and see if we can get promotional flyers put up around the university buildings and possibly in the union to help increase the awareness of PureFM. I would also like to see if there is some way we can get the Union to play PureFM in their building during the day. I’d also like to try and work with the heads of our other media related societies to help putting together and further promoting charity events such as 48hr and to cross promote each others societies. Thank you for your consideration. Nicola Rainbird As your current Deputy of Marketing and Publicity, I would like to be your next Head of Marketing and Publicity for the next academic year.If elected I will;- Build a bigger Marketing team - Continue building connections with companies to gain more sponsorship - To use the Marketing budget effectively to ensure we are still getting the best quality marketing for the best possible price - Send out myself and the marketing team on the streets to get the public more in the know of what PureFM is and what we have to offer to them - Work closely with Finance & Sales to make sure that we are making the most out of our budget. - Work closely with Events to ensure that myself and the marketing team are promoting each event that we do. - Work with the current members to help push PureFM at Freshers Fayre and get people joining us. - I would like to work with Head of Programming to develop a ‘Way To Market Your Show’ guide to help new and existing members to be able to advertise and promote their shows effectively. 5.7 Head of Music (2) Daniel Seymour The reasons why I would like to be your Head of Music is because I currently have a two hour slot on Pure FM every Thursday from 8pm until 10pm and I absolutely love it. Music is my passion and a career in radio would be a dream job to me. In order to enhance my C.V and make me more employable in the future, it would be great to say I was part of such a great committee. I am a very organised person and I would take great joy in organising the playlists for Pure.FM. I have a huge knowledge of music and I would not be biased on the genre being played on the autopilot as I enjoy various kinds of music with house music being my favourite but I also enjoy indie, garage, drum and bass and lots more. In terms of album and gig reviews this interests me greatly, I have applied to be a writer for the Ministry of Sound website which means I will be talking about the local Portsmouth music scene so that role along with the role of Head of Music for Pure FM go hand in hand so I believe I will be very good at writing gig reviews. I have already been to lots of gigs and festivals as they give me a great buzz. I have been to large scale events such as seeing Swedish House Mafia, Calvin Harris, Example and Faithless at huge venues across the U.K but I have also been to more intimate gigs to see lesser known artists at Wedgewood Rooms and the Portsmouth Pyramids Centre in which I have seen the likes of Maverick Sabre, One Night Only and the Rifles so I have a great experience of live music and would thrive on the role on writing gig reviews. Furthermore, I am a very confident and outgoing person and I would love to contact and interview people in the music industry and I would have a bunch of questions that I would be eager to ask them. Overall, I believe this role is perfect for me and I believe I have the knowledge and the capabilities to be able to do it and I will tackle this job role head on. Adam Jeffries I would like to apply for the position of Music Manager for this year. I believe I should be voted into this role as I am very committed and highly organised. I love music and am a huge fan of music itself, not just individual artists. I love hearing different sounds of a track and seeing how it was put together. I enjoy many genres of music and always find new songs, often months before commercial knowledge of the music. I intend to give all members an equal chance to go to gig reviews if they wish by keeping the members page updated with gig news. I also would like to try and arrange music on the system into an a-z format as I have found typing in the song does not always work. I would work with other members such as technology to see if this is possible. Also, set up a way for members to search for songs on the system from home using studio 3 or even add songs (that would have to be moderated beforehand). This way presenters can see what music is available easier. I would also like to have a music page on studio 3, where members can post songs they would like to have on the system, and problems they encounter, or any other ideas relating to music management. I will consider all local acts and albums we get sent as it is important to not disregard something just because your not into the genre of it or doesn’t sound good on paper. I will aim to keep contacts and maintain relationships with artists Pure enjoy. In my time as a presenter on Pure I have already been sent music to listen to on email, twitter and my show page on facebook. I have experience with editing software as well. I am incredibly passionate about music and have loved being a part of PureFM this year. I wish to further my involvement in student radio and really become involved in something amazing.Thankyou for considering my application 5.8 Head of Online (1) Joel Clayton Hello, I’m Joel.First of all, (and most importantly) I’m computer literate. I’m applying for Head of Online because I enjoy the social side of Pure FM- whether it be social networking or reaching more people with a better looking Website. This year I will be making the website look more professional and smart by uploading the content the committee and members send to me in order to provide a bigger reach for Pure FM. We already have a great station, and I feel I can really add to it with my eye for a professional edge. Thanks, Joel 5.9 Head of Technology (1) Kieran Milton I aim to both sustain and improve the systems of Pure, with projects to both maintain and improve the computers and playout systems and the studio itself. I have experience with server management through my course (Computer Network Management and Design) and with being the current Systems Manager I have a good knowledge of how they work and how they can be improved.I aim to be as available as possible with members, with a dedicated number in case of emergency to call or text instead of posting on Facebook or emailing.I will assist with any OB I can, and support any members ideas for OB’s and shows. In summary, I want to use what technology there is out there to make Pure the best it can. 5.10 Head of News (1) Charlie Price I plan to continue the good work that Vicki Parker did last year. She managed to expand the news team and even introduced new roles such as the Sports Editor and Features Editor. Being the Sports Editor last year I was fully involved with the workings of PureFM and became familiar with the equipment. I also had to regularly contribute and be in charge of a small team of reporters.I would intend to expand the sport segment of the RE Port show (which I plan to continue running) and have live interviews in the studio with captains/players or presidents form the societies. The sport segment would cover all university sports and hopefully, if I manage to get a larger number of sports reporters than was achieved last year, we could get more detailed match reports from the games. I also plan to continue the studentwiki package, which I believe is a great way for students to find out about the goings on at the University. This again can be expanded and a larger part of the show can be given to this.I would also like to try and give more of a student voice to the show. I believe that if there is an interactive news debate/discussion as part of the show, it would make the news and show in general more appealing. I would do this by either inviting guests into the studio to have a discussion on air, which would also encourage listeners to get involved. But this could also be done as a package where I would try to get a reporter to go into the streets and ask the public’s opinion of a certain story or issue. One final change that I would make id to try and pre record bulletins that could be included on people’s shows. Obviously I would not want to intrude onto other shows, but I believe that if we can get a daily bulletin recorded and then played a couple of times throughout the day it would be hugely beneficial to the station. I would try to get a team of bulletin readers to take turns in reading the news as this will give people invaluable experience if the wish to pursue a career within journalism. 5.11 Head of Training (2) Hugh Varley Serious Business (Heading)During my two years at PureFM, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of putting on a radio show every week. This comes at the expense of the committee’s time and effort that keeps this radio station running. I believe that I can put back into PureFM the experience and knowledge I have gained as your Head of Training for the coming year. I have previous experience of being on a committee as I was previously Treasurer for the University of Nottingham Korfball Club. I am aware of the blood, sweat and tears that goes into running a society. I feel I am approachable, kind and understanding. I have had several jobs where I was chosen to train others due my diligence and proficiency i.e. I make one hell of a Big Mac. I believe I have the ability to mediate effectively from a neutral perspective when things get stressful. I understand that not everyone is the same and some may require more time to get to grips with the controls and the concepts of radio. Fun Stuff (heading) Not many of you are aware that this year I was part of the PureFM secret Jelly Baby Legion. I was seconded to Budapest, where we were tasked with fighting off a Sponge Dragon and a Jam Phoenix. All the while, there was a threat of New Éclair War but luckily, we were victorious in the fight against Hungery. Upon returning to PureFM, I was promoted to Lord Captain Commander and have been in charge of the Legion since. That is all I wish to say about that, we lost a lot of good Jelly Babies out there. I am to ensure that every single show that goes out on PureFM plays at least one Biffy Clyro song, so that the heathens of the world can truly understand the sheer amount of awesome they possess.. Orion, Oli, Timmy and I will be living together next year meaning there will be safe haven for all PureFM members when the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse occurs. Tl;dr (heading) • I want to put something back into PureFM after two years • I have previous experience as a committee member and training in the work place • I want to create a new PureFM training video that is light-hearted, informative and welcoming • I want to extend the role of Training to assist the Head of Programming with show monitoring • I am Lord Captain Commander of the Jelly Baby Legion, I love Biffy Clyro and I like Train(ing)s Richard Smith - Presented at PureFM for 1 year - Love to help, have helped others on various occasions throughout the year - Contributed to the 48 Hour Broadcast 5.12 Head of Socials (1) Becky McNamara I would like to be head of socials for pure fm because I love organising nights out, I have a lot of experience with getting drunk (and getting other people drunk), and I have a fair few connections in Eskimo and rough hill. I’m totally mobbed up.I also have a fair few ideas for socials that don’t involve getting completely smashed and making a fool out of yourself, so there’s something for everyone. When I organise a social I’m always looking for fun, different things to do, and I always make sure everyone has a good time. I also hereby promise to document every drunken and hilarious moment with photographic evidence. Pick me, pick me. 5.13 Head of Events (1) Helen Brennan Hi, My name is Helen and I want to be your Events Manager for academic year 2013/2014. I currently host “Hometime with Brennan & Bailey” with Ashley Bailey and I have also been a part of the events team for almost a year now. I noticed there wasn’t many people in our events team and this is something I want to work on. I want to build a strong team so we can all build upon our event management skills at Pure FM. Now we have a second stream it is possible to do more outside broadcasts. We all have creative minds, and outside broadcasts is where we can really try and experiment. I have noticed that we don’t have any speech radio shows. This is something I definitely want to try out. I’d like to work with the comedy society to produce a panel show, this would be a recorded show, and would need the assistance of the: production manager, technical team and programme controller to make it successful. If successful this could give us the potential content to enter us into Best Speech Programming at the Student Radio Awards. Last year we did a 48 hour broadcast which was successful. However, I don’t feel many people were involved and this is a great opportunity to get involved and do silly things for charity! It would be great if we could do multiple charity fundraising events and broadcasts rather than one big broadcast. It would be great to fundraise for charities located around Portsmouth whether it is in aid of the Portsmouth Association for the Blind or the Cancer Research Campaign. There are so many local charities that would appreciate the support. Each year we broadcast live from the Great South Run, however I feel that the content that goes out isn’t formatted very well. It is important to get the runners motivated however we need to work together to improve the audience interaction. I would work with the PC to work on improving this! Varsity – the content that we broadcast this year was amazing, and I really don’t know how I can beat that. I want to continue working closely with SURGE radio and I want to keep the outputs in Southampton just as high as they were in Portsmouth this year. Before the end of term I would love to put together a charity event with current committee and the new elected committee. It would be really challenging but it’d be something fun to do, and will give you the chance to see what we can do as a station! So why should you choose me? Because… • I have great time management • I am a doer, not a talker • I want the opportunity to get Pure FM out there a bit more in the community • I know we have the potential and equipment to do more outside broadcasts and I have experience as I have worked with our Events Manager on organising our 48 hour broadcast. • Finally, I have the mind set and motivation to make this all happen, I just need the help and support of you guys!
EGM Manifestos Posted on January 23, 2013 by Oliver Ing Manifestos Below are the manifestos for the members who have applied to join the committee. The elections will be held on Thursday 24 January at 6pm in King Henry 0.01 Training Manager (3) Mike Heaps Hello my names Mike, I’m currently studying on my 3rd year at Portsmouth and I want to be your next Training Manager for Pure FM. I have currently been a part of Pure FM for two years and have done many different shows with many different music types and have also been the marketing manager for Pure FM and your Acting Training manager Whilst at Pure FM I have used a large range of kit and software this includes in and out of the studio doing outside broadcasts. During my younger years I have trained many different people on many different areas of computing. If I get elected as this year’s training manager I want to make a contingency plan to protect the future of Pure FM and usage of the SAC. This will mean a Temporary Studio encase of any future incident. I also wish to start a Training team that will be able to cover weekends for me and others as I’ve currently have a team of 3 working with me. As Acting training manager I’ve noticed a few people asking me questions about the Pure FM studio, I wish to make a Pure FM online handbook as a paper copy already located in the Pure FM studio and I wish to update and make this Handbook digital on Studio3.com I hope that you have enjoyed reading my proposal for this year’s Training Manager and I’f not elected I enjoyed working and training with everyone this year, Thank you. Richard Smith I have only been a part of Pure FM for a short while, and I wish I’d had the nerve to sign up in my first year – I’ve loved every minute of it! I would love to be a bigger part of it all; I feel that I could teach others to be very capable hosts, and I will always do my best to make the necessary time for whatever the role requires. No Suitable Candidate Sales and Finance Manager (1) No Suitable Candidate
Election Manifestos 2012 Posted on April 29, 2012 by Jason Slack The following people have expressed an interest in running for the open committee positions and met the deadline set. All Pure FM members are welcome to attend the AGM, which will be held at 6pm on Monday 30th April 2012 in Richmond RB LT2, and vote for the candidates. Station Manager (3) Ben Foden If there’s one thing that sums up what I’d do for Pure FM, it would be to let members flow with their ideas – I believe that no idea should be knocked back without being thoroughly looked into, especially with events and shows making encouragement the key to success. I want to have an open forum, where members would be welcomed to discuss any concerns they may have with members of the committee. I want to concentrate more on Pure FM as a Brand and identity so that we can continue building on what we have built in the past 18 years or so, making the station better than ever before. I would try to get Pure FM played in outlets around University once again, and also in places around Portsmouth as a whole (such as shops, bars etc) now that we have the technology to do so. I have spent a year and a half on the committee already, so I have a fair idea as to how Pure FM runs and how to treat the union. I feel as though I’ve tried to support our members over this time, and I wish to continue doing so. I’m not going to bore anyone with loads of rabble, but that is the summary of what I’d do – the station would be more member led with members involved in every decision the station makes. Oliver Ing I have a real passion for the success of Radio. I’ve been a station manager before at my school’s radio station, “Revamp Radio” which I have helped set up. Since October I’ve been a member of Pure FM’s committee so I know already what is expected of this high intense role I wish to undertake. I have a goal to get as many students involved with Pure FM, be it; Listening to the station, being a presenter, or even working behind the scenes, I know how much potential Pure FM has to offer and I want to embrace this opportunity we can provide students. I want to take steps Pure FM has never taken before and make it a station worth listening to during the day and at night (even when there is no presenter on air.) I have created a list of what I feel needs changing, or doing to make the station run even better than what it’s doing now. To highlight two of the key areas in this short manifesto: 1: I want the news to have more of an impact with our audience by scheduling it in every hour. 2: I will work with the Program Controller to overhauled the stations branding of the time slots to make shows flow better and also ensure show monitoring is happening effectively but also provide feedback to used for SRA Awards. I have a strong contact with Chris Carnegy from BBC Radio Solent who has offered to lend us a hand and I also have contacts with Wise Buddah the recruitment agency for radio 1. I’m an approachable person, I don’t break under pressure and this year my focus will solely be upon the members and trying to find ways to offer them as many opportunities as simply possible. No Suitable Candidate Secretary & Personnel Manager (3) Correlley Greenland Since September, I have hosted a show on Pure Fm with Glen as well as on Express Fm, and have loved it from the start. I love Radio; listening and presenting, and would love to take this opportunity to have a bigger role in the station.Although to some the role of Secretary and Personnel Manager may seem boring, I see it as important and I believe that it requires many skills that I possess. I do not do a Radio linked degree like many people who are involved in Pure Fm, I study English Literature. However, I believe that my degree gives me many skills which are essential in Radio. Any degree, no matter what it is needs good organisation skills as well as good time keeping, which I believe that I have. Another skill that is vital to the role of Secretary and Personnel Manager is reliability and dedication. Having a weekly radio show shows that I am a reliable person as well as the fact that I have a weekend job, which I never miss. Attending the Student Radio Conference further shows my dedication to student radio. Also important for this role is good communication and people skills as the role requires teamwork as well as a lot of paperwork. I believe that I do have good people skills, although you would have to double check that with my friends and my degree also shows that I have strong communication skills, plus I am constantly checking my emails. Thank you for the opportunity. Vicki Parker I’m Vicki Parker, a second year Journalism and Media student and current Head of News. Being on committee this year has developed my understanding of what is required in being a part of the team and developed a working knowledge of how the station is run. I would like to get more involved with the station and support the rest of the team where I can through this role. This year I have also been the Secretary for the Film and Photo Society so I know what is required of the role. I will happily send out the weekly newsletter to all members- consistently and professionally. I have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and am able to tackle problems quickly and efficiently to help the station run smoothly. In this role, I will make sure all issues and queries are answered with a fast turn around. Additionally, this year as Secretary for Photo Soc. I was charged with room bookings, writing and sharing the weekly agenda and with taking minutes at each meeting, so am capable of taking on this side of the role; as part of my degree I have learnt to write at 100 words-per-minute and as a fast typer I can easily take notes as necessary to the role. As Secretary this year I frequently led meetings and in the absence of the society President, took control as necessary, in conjunction with the rest of the committee and Union regulation. To this end, I feel I could competently assist the Station Manager or take control when needed, as required by the role. I have also developed a close relationship with the Union and its staff to take issues further if needed. No Suitable Candidate Programme Controller (3) Helen Brennan Hey! My name is Helen Brennan and I am running for the position of Programme Controller. I’ve been at Pure FM since September. As well as presenting a show, I have got involved in several outside broadcasts and been lucky enough to host a live studio session too. I have been given many opportunities at Pure. I want to give back to the station what it has given me. With three years customer service experience I have great people’s skills, I am always happy to help, easy to talk to, and very organised. I believe I have the skills and confidence to be a successful programme controller. I would like to: • Work closely with the training manager to ensure training is completed once shows have been confirmed. Forwarding the confirmation e-mails will allow the training manager to see who needs be trained by a specific date. • I want to give members that are on a waiting list the opportunity to be trained in studio two so they can pre-record shows that can be aired after midnight. These will also be made into a podcast if required. • Help find ways of recruiting new members- for example: at Freshers Fayre we could allow potential members to watch a show in studio two, so they can picture their selves in the studio. • Create a show schedule template as well as a planning/advice sheet with the Station manager so it is available should presenters require it. • Set up an online system so people can log when they arrive and leave their show. In order to be professional lateness is something that needs to be cracked down on. I will continue to enforce that: • 48 hours notice must be given if a show is to be cancelled so that I can find suitable cover if the presenter cannot find it their self. Warnings will be issued if failure to turn up to the show without a valid reason. • Prioritise member’s first shows before members can have an additional show. • Show monitoring will be continued, with random “”spot checks”" regularly giving presenters feedback. Mitchell Sargent I want to run for Programme Controller because I want to advance our station and improve the content on it. I’m approachable, fun and well organised; three important qualities that I believe our programme controller needs. I want to ensure that everyone has constant monitoring of their shows and receives feedback. I would like to do this once a month with every show; more or less often if asked by any specific show. I believe this will be the best way to ensure all our shows and the content they provide is to a high standard. With this feedback I also want to make sure the Training Manager and Tech Team (mainly the Equipment Manager) become a more fluid entity with the Programme Controller, actively responding to the feedback provided by shows to ensure everyone is trained in all aspects of the studio and to ensure they get the equipment and technical support they require. I also want to continue our experiences with ExpressFM as I believe it’s a great opportunity for our shows to get time on an FM station, as well as showcasing how good our station is to the rest of Portsmouth. I have experience with ExpressFM and am trained on the equipment, meaning I will be able to work alongside the Station Manager to ensure as many people as possible are able to get involved in ExpressFM, and broadcast high-quality shows to the rest of Portsmouth. I also want to work hand-in-hand with the Music Manager to ensure as many shows that want special guests or interviews are able to get them. This organisation will also extend to the events manger, ensuring we have presenters who are able to man the OB kit when we do any outside broadcasts. No Suitable Candidate Music Manager (4) David Morgan Music has been a passion of mine from a young age. If you look at my music collection you’ll find everything; from pop to metal, hip hop to dub-step. I feel that having this diverse taste of music is a key part of the Music Manager role, as I will not be biased when it comes to updating the music database. Also, I like to keep up with the latest releases (as well as listening to all the classics!), so you can rest assured there will be a great mix of tunes on the system. Under our current Music Manager, I’ve been sent to review many gigs, as well interview some of the best talent around. This is something I’m keen to pursue. I would love for even more people to get involved with this, and help keep the website constantly updated with new interviews and reviews. I believe that this is a fantastic way to attract audiences to Pure FM, as often we will get the latest news from bands and artists before any of the major radio stations get a chance! Under the role of Music Manager, I would look to form a close-knit team of people, who I could trust to be sent to gigs across the UK. I would also love to be able to cover some of the bigger events such as festivals and all dayers, and I think this would be definitely be achievable with some of the contacts I have acquired over the years. We’ve had a number of successful in-studio performances from touring bands, so this is another aspect I would want people to get involved with. I hope you will choose me for the role, because I feel that I could bring the passion needed for this position, and would love to get more involved with Pure FM. Nicola Rainbird As I am currently on the music team, I have already experienced opportunities to interview and review gigs. If I am elected as Music Manager I will; - Make it easy as possible to get hold of so people can get more opportunities for reviews, interviews and studio sessions. - Conduct weekly music team meetings. - Update the mAirlist every week to enable consistent up to date music, in all genres. - Give advice to those who will be experiencing their first gig review/interview/studio session. - Ensure every member of the music team receives a music team guild line which will have advice, tips and rules for all occasions. - Try my best to live up to the high standards already set in place by previous and current committee members. Timmy Harlequin My name is Timmy Harlequin and I think that I’m the best candidate to be Pure FM’s Music Manager. So far this year the current Music Manager and his team have done a fantastic job and I’d like to ensure that the standards they have set are continued and, if possible, exceeded. I want to make sure that Pure FM is the absolute best in student radio in terms of musical content, meeting the needs of all who listen. As Music Manager I would of course do all those roles appointed to me and try to do more, such as keeping the playlists up to date with the most recent music from both the UK Chart and the specialist music charts, such and Rock, Indie and Electronica so that we don’t ever isolate our music output to one group of listeners. I have experience in interviewing bands for the music team, having done two band interviews and during the 36 Hour Charity Broadcast I also organised an interview myself, over Skype, with a band from America to help boost the publicity we were getting. If I were to get the position of Music Manager I would keep up the strong connections we have with the various production companies and form new connections with new companies through various networking, to expand the horizons and possibilities for band interviews and studio sessions with bands, as the current Music Team have been doing extremely well. The upkeep of the playlist will of course be one of my top priorities, ensuring it’s up to date with all the latest music and even putting up music that has been known to be requested but not on the list, updating the system weekly at the very least. That’s it from me, thank you very much. No Suitable Candidate Marketing & Publicity Officer (2) Tom Pettinger My Name is Tom Pettinger, I have been presenting at Pure Fm since October and I would like to be part of the committee due to me wanting to have a more active way in how the Station is run especially in forms of promotion, marketing and publicity of the station. I have been in talks with various members of the committee and have developed an understand of how the Student Union work in regards to marketing and believe I have a developed a way in using the system to help the Station gain a reputation within the university and with the new Students wanting to be apart of the station. I also believe my experience in regards to marketing will help me in this position. I have also gained work experience in two companies and hopefully working for another company this summer. I also believe this will come as a benefit in helping the station with new idea and helping to create a new and stronger for the station in regards of identity. I have come up with various ideas to help the station gain more listeners, including aiming advertising at the Fresher’s starting at the University. This includes regular posters in the SU and in halls, I would also like to get Purefm fridge magnet bottle openers in the halls to target the students directly. Another idea I had is to get double side coasters with us and other of the Student union media outlets so halve the cost and to put these across the University. I would also like to have regular meeting with the Pugwash, Pmag and USPTV so all the events can be coordinated in order to gain more people attending the events and being aware that they are taking place. No Suitable Candidate Head of News (2) Vicki Parker “I’m Vicki P, a second year Journalism and Media student and current Head of News for Pure FM. Through being a part of the team, first as a reporter then as Head of News this year, I have developed a key understanding of how the team works and what is required of the role. This year, within my role, I have worked hard to continue the original news show, Re:Port and created The Democracy Show to work closer with the Union, raise awareness and hold those elected to account. I have written the News Team Handbook to support each reporter in interviewing, editing, script-writing and more and worked to support the whole team where needed through training and weekly meetings. My main aim of this year was to develop and expand the news team. As part of this I created several new team positions to get more people involved and to expand its remit. This has proven successful with the biggest team that we’ve had so far. I want to continue these developments and work with other media outlets on major events to create better content and to work more with those elected, societies and students to know exactly what is happening around campus and create a better news output. I aim to work with the Publicity Manager to make the team more visible around campus and encourage more students to join and to secure a solid framework for our news show, branching out into more areas, to make the output more entertaining, educational and be a platform for all students to air their views. I aim to re-introduce the daily bulletins also, to deliver news as it happens. I feel I am able to competently fill the role, leading the news team effectively and work with the rest of committee. As the current position holder I know what is required and feel I am in the best position to set a solid grounding for the team for future expansion, though my experience and what I have learnt from my degree. ” No Suitable Candidate Sales & Finance Manager (2) Christian Bulpitt Pure FM has been the best aspect about my University life so far, i have loved every minute of it and though not being totally confident with all of the techy side i believe that i can make a real contribution to the PureFM committee. I have built up a great relationship with many of the PureFM team and would love the opportunity to give something back to the station which has made my Uni life so enjoyable. Now on to why i believe that i am qualified for this position. Prior to coming to University i worked in an accountancy firm and i know im not completely inept with numbers which i assume plays a large role in this committee position. Secondly, i am the sort of person who doesn’t find it difficult approaching and talking to people which is a key skill in opening up and maintaining dialogue. Also i am approachable and easy to talk to (i think), which means for the members i believe i can be a friendly face who can easily be addressed and will endever to voice any concerns at the meetings. And last and possibly the most important reason why i believe i should get this position is … I own a calculator No Suitable Candidate Training Manager (3) Jacob Sims The main reason i am re-applying for this role is because there is a lot of experience that i have gained from this year that i wish to apply this on coming year to make things easier for the committee and for the members! A good example is this, at the moment our current system is that you email the training email and i reply and we come up with a date. That takes time. Instead i want to create a training page on the website where i can easily state when there are studio sessions and people can sign up on that page to get trained. And then of course if there really is a bad bad bad problem then the email is still alive. On top of that i want to create a better relationship with the programme controller so we can confirm who is trained and then get on top of it from there. There is a lot of other ideas i wish to apply this on coming year! Mike Heaps Hello my names Mike, I’m currently studying on my 3rd year at Portsmouth and I want to be your next Training Manager for Pure FM. I have currently been a part of Pure FM for two years and have done many different shows with many different music types and have also been the marketing manager for Pure FM. Whilst at Pure FM I have used a large range of kit and software this includes in and out of the studio doing outside broadcasts. During my younger years I have trained many different people on many different areas of computing. While been a cadet for the RAF (Royal air force) and a Non Commissioned officer I was in-charge of teaching a variety of subjects such as Rifle training, Map reading, Living in the field and Aircraft recognition, this is from teaching to testing. If I get elected as this year’s training manager I want to make a new sub-domain called training.purefm.com, where the user will be able to log-on and see what he or she has been taught, from there they will also be able to see their copy of the on-air agreement as I wish to have a paperless system and have all copies of the on-air agreement on there. The user will be able to view detailed information about the Pure FM studio and how to use the kit this will also include the OB (outside broadcast) kit and all its features it will also include software for both production and broadcasting. I hope that you have enjoyed reading my proposal for this year’s Training Manager, Thank you. No Suitable Candidate Production Manager (2) Glen Scott If I’m picked for Production Manager, I plan to make sure that each show has their own set of Jingles and Idents that’ll give their show a much higher level of professionalism. I also hope to produce a much larger selection of Pure FM idents to give presenters a much wider choice of what to use in their show. I want to promote the use of adverts for your shows to be played when the system is in autopilot, with the option to play them during your shows if you want to help promote somebody else’s show. I found that when I started at Pure FM, I was barely using the cartwall because of how spread out everything was; I didn’t want to have to go to beds, and then idents, and then television themes. This is why I want every radio show to have their own personal page containing all of their personalised jingles and idents, as well as a selection of sound effects, clips and beds chosen by the presenters themselves. I want a big push towards podcasting. I believe that each new member should be made aware of how to create a podcast, either by recording it live, or using the Pure FM extra site to download and edit your recording. I want each member to be able to access a set of sound clips, jingles, idents and effects that can be edited into each podcast to add a level of professionalism. I hope to also work towards uploading the most successful podcasts onto the iTunes store. These are just some of the plans I have if I’m elected as Production Manager. I believe a lot more can be done to improve the stations overall sound and I’ll be dedicated to making sure everything I’ve said happens. No Suitable Candidate Equipment Manager (2) Ed Roberts I feel I can bring strong leadership and knowledge to this role and hope to dedicate time to improve both the studios and the OB kit, working closely with all members of Pure FM wherever possible. I believe that the presenter’s opinions are key to the development of the studios and would like to make it easier for them to have their voice heard as to how the studios can be improved and developed to enhance the quality of the radio that they produce. I would like to work with both new and existing members of the technical team to improve outside broadcasts and the OB kit to a level at which we are confident enough to be able to accept short notice invitations to cover events and produce high quality OBs. New and existing members of the technical team will be able to come to me with queries and I will endeavour to provide the correct answer wherever possible. I would like to work with members of the technical team to find out where their strengths lie and develop their skills and understanding with regard to equipment. All members of Pure FM will be able to report problems or damage to me, safe in the knowledge that I will be able to rectify the problem. It is my intention to improve studio 2, to a level that all members would be able to use it with ease, this will involve working with the training manager and potentially replacing the equipment currently used. Finally I believe that a good relationship between the technical managers and all other members will help the continuing development and improvement of Pure FM. No Suitable Candidate Systems Manager (2) Kieran Milton I am a current Tech Team member with an interest in the systems side of the station. This ties in well with my Computer Networking course, which I hope to bring together to help develop the station. I believe have taken an active role this year, helping with events like Varsity where we set up an OB stream from the balcony of a sports hall, with Sports Relief and through the election period. I would enjoy the challenge of this new role, hoping to implement new technologies discovered at SRACon while talking to industry people. Two projects I would like to look into in the coming year would be an FM licence and playout in the university. I would like to see what work has been done in the past on this, build on it, look at the feasibility and implement if viable. I believe that these would help boost the profile of the station to the general audience and wider community of Portsmouth. All of these would be done while maintaining the vital systems of the station to host and present the website, networks and content, making myself available to members as much as possible for any support they need during normal use, special events and any system failures. I would look to work with the other Pure teams at any opportunity they require, with Events and the OB systems, Marketing and the website, Production and the technology behind them and any other teams we can support and get assistance from. Working together with other teams I believe we can really grow the profile of the station in the coming year. No Suitable Candidate Events & Social (2) Liam MacLeod Well since joining pure fm as part of the committee i have gained a really valuable insight to being part of an amazing team that really works well in the interest of producing great content and radio. Considering i only started half way through the year after the amazing work claire had previously done I really feel i could put on some great events, i was involved with varsity and as a team at highfield we were able to get some great recordings and content, but I would like to be more involved with the planning and organising before hand. I am very focused on charity events and this is particularly important to me as I would like to see us put back what we get from our union and also the local community via fundraising. I have also just planned the BIG IOW Pub Crawl which i hope you will find enjoyable. So please consider me for your events and social manager. Thanks No Suitable Candidate

You will also have the responsibility to manage a production team, which will include giving your team members training so that they can assist you with any production-based tasks, such as creating podcasts and helping members construct pre-recordings of their shows. The role of production manager is a very practical role, therefore requiring detailed knowledge on how the studios and equipment function (particularly studio 2, which is primarily for production) and how a station sound is created. EQUIPMENT MANAGER Within this role you are responsible for the maintenance of the studio’s audio hardware, along with the Outside Broadcast (OB) Kit and PA Kit. Election Manifestos Posted on November 15, 2011 by Jason Slack The following people have expressed an interest in running for the 2 open committee positions and met the deadline set. All Pure FM members are welcome to attend the Extended General Meeting (EGM), which will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 15th November 2011 in Union Meeting Room 4, and vote for the candidates. Sales & Finance Manager: PETER OXBORROW Hello, my name is Pete Oxborrow, and I am standing for the position of the Sales and Finance Manager for Pure FM. There are several reasons why I am standing, and reasons why I feel I’m a suitable candidate for the position. Being a mathematics with finance and management student, I have a good handle on not only figures, but also with the administration of balance sheets and producing budgets. I also already have a solid understanding of the Union’s financing structure, the budget allocation and accounts, so can draw on this to organise the finances and present them to the committee quickly and understandably. I also have very comprehensive working relationships with many of the Union staff. This will help me fulfil the role efficiently as it means I can contact the correct people about relevant issues. This could include working with the media coordinator to approve payments, to working with the business manager to confirm sponsorship deals through the Union’s promotions company. If elected, I would: Work with the media coordinator to put together a balance sheet and budget report for the year up to now. Design and make available budget request forms, enabling committee members to request funding and an efficient process for the media coordinator. Improve Pure FM links with BAM through Tom Worman and use these links to secure sponsorship deals. Thank you for your consideration. Re-Open Nominations (RON) Hi I am Ron. You should vote for me if you do not feel as though the candidates are suitable for the job as the team will start all over again. Marketing & Publicity Officer: OLIVER ING My name is Oliver Ing and I am a first year (fresher) at the University of Portsmouth, studying Television and Broadcasting. I would like to apply for the position of Marketing Manager as I feel that I can, not only myself bring a lot to Pure FM but also develop a self motivated team (who have already agreed to assist me) if I am to achieve the position. As you may have already gathered, I am extremely passionate about Pure FM as a station and I believe that if I became Marketing Manager that it is my job to get the word on the street about how incredible we are. I feel that we have a large number of listeners at the moment, but with any chance of café, bars or other high street shops playing our station out to the public, we need to increase this by advertising the brilliant radio shows we produce seven days a week. I have previously managed a technical team at my previous college and also in conjunction was radio manager at Revamp Radio, also at the college and so I am no stranger when it comes to managing people and keeping a team motivated. Dealing with pressure is no issue as I don’t usually get stressed and when I do, deal with it positively so as not to disrupt others who may be focused on task. Re-Open Nominations (RON) Hi I am Ron. You should vote for me if you do not feel as though the candidates are suitable for the job as the team will start all over again.
